MP Cast Program :
Perhaps the angriest person in America today is Donald Trump. For months, Trump repeatedly attempted to use sarcasm and insinuation to turn public opinion against Zahran Mamdani. It’s worth recalling that during a joint meeting between Trump and Netanyahu, a journalist asked Trump what he would do if Mamdani were to become mayor of New York. Trump replied that he didn’t know him and there was no need to worry, since Mamdani hadn’t accomplished anything yet.
But today, Zahran Mamdani finally took the reins of New York City’s mayoral office. Trump couldn’t tolerate this development, even in the first few hours. He explicitly labeled Mamdani “a communist” and expressed dismay that such an individual could rise to power in New York.
Meanwhile, Mamdani announced the appointment of his transition team and promised to form a government that is both competent and compassionate toward New Yorkers. Not one to let Trump’s provocations go unanswered, Mamdani responded to Washington’s threats to cut New York’s funding and deploy federal forces to the city by vowing to challenge any action by Trump through the judicial system.
Alongside Trump, his Zionist allies are deeply concerned. Although Mamdani built strong ties with the Jewish community—particularly Orthodox Jews opposed to the policies of the occupying regime—during his election campaign, figures such as Amichai Chikli, Israel’s Minister of Diaspora Affairs, labeled Mamdani a “Hamas supporter” and promised to closely monitor the actions and policies of New York’s city hall. They will likely attempt to pressure him over the next four years.
For instance, at the exact time of Mamdani’s election, Robert Tucker, head of the New York Fire Department, submitted his resignation following Mamdani’s victory. News sources reported that Tucker’s decision was “influenced by Zionist viewpoints and his belief that he could not continue serving under Mamdani’s leadership.”
Initially, Mamdani was considered an unlikely candidate to win the New York mayoral election. His promise to improve the lives of New York’s working class, coupled with his outspoken criticism of Israel’s crimes against Palestinians, mobilized a powerful coalition of opponents who spent millions to defeat him.
Mamdani’s rise also exposed deep divisions within the Democratic Party, where party leaders either refrained from endorsing him or reluctantly supported him months after his campaign began. Ultimately, his campaign became a test of the growing gap between the people’s demands and what politicians and wealthy donors are willing to deliver.
Mamdani’s election has resonated widely across the globe—from ordinary people in Muslim countries witnessing a shift in American attitudes toward Muslims after 9/11, to Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum, who remarked in a press conference: “What happened yesterday is highly significant and worth analyzing for all of us.”
In Uganda, Mamdani’s country of origin, media reports indicate he has gained significant popularity among the youth, many of whom now seek to drive change in their own country and view Mamdani as a role model for this path.
In the end, it can be said that Zahran Mamdani’s election as mayor of New York has not only altered America’s political equations but has also become a symbol of gradual transformation in the country’s public opinion. His victory reflects the growth of a justice-oriented discourse and criticism of traditional power structures in the United States—a discourse that, beyond American borders, has inspired many young people and political activists around the world.
